Harry Meade's circle-jumping exercise

About this video

This is a superb exercise to ensure that even top horses are reminded of the basics! Four star event rider, Harry Meade, rides '08 Burghley horse Dunauger, who is not the easiest on the flat as he is a little stiff and tends to 'bulge out' through his shoulder. Harry builds up to four jumps on a circle and explains why it's such a test. The circle is tight and the jumps are not on perfect strides so the horse has to think for himself, stay balanced and straight in the air in order to jump and turn. This builds a quality canter, rhythm and suppleness, not to mention rider balance. According to Harry, "the exercise is as much about flatwork as it is about jumping".

Fiona Price 17 Nov 2010 I would say it's 20x60, definitely not 20x40! Having just had an arena built myself, I wouldn't advise smaller than 20x60 for jumping and even that's a bit tight!
annabelle 17 Nov 2010 Is that a standard 20 x 40 meters arena? I'm planing to build an arena. The area I have is just a bit bigger than a 20x40. I was worried it would be to small for jumping but am much encouraged to see harry training his Burghley mount in a tight space!!
Fiona Price 7 Aug 2010 I believe it is!
AlicelovesAnavah 7 Aug 2010 Is that Tracy Garside's horse? He is a gorgeous colour!
Wendy 16 May 2009 Good video, I have ridden this exercise with my trainer, and we have taken it a step further, in that we counted the strides the horse naturally took between say two of the fences, if she took 3 I then had to ride it on 4. This is only good once you have mastered the exercise Harry has done.
