About this video
Cees Slings looks every bit the music maestro and he lives up to his image! The Dutch composer has written pop music hits, music for TV programmes and adverts, and produced bands. One day he saw Anky Van Grunsven on Dutch TV (she's one of the biggest sporting stars in Holland) and faxed her saying he "loved the rider, loved the horse but the music was lousy"! Subsequently, he wrote a number of Kurs for Anky including the famous Bonfire symphony. Cees explains what makes a great Kur and he talks about the work he is currently doing with Laura Bechtolsheimer. He also reveals a secret! Cees talks to Fiona Price, February '09.

Casey 11 Mar 2009 No need for apologies. Also, if you look at the video of the making of Laura's Kur with Laura, Alf and Dad Wilfried, isn't it stunning to observe and to be part of a training session like this? I filmed Alf and Laura, the choreography design is the team's effort, and when I'm watching it now, from a complete new angle in the Horse Hero video, tears come up into my eyes; I am watching sheer beauty, passion and dedication; wow, I'm looking forward to supporting this combination with a lovely piece of music. I won't disappoint you all, you can bet on it ( but all musical suggestions are welcome, hahaha!). Cees
donnerprinz 10 Mar 2009 Ok, not sure what has happened but it wasn't my intention to offend anybody at all and obviously I have done so with my comment. I am not English, so maybe I didn't express myself the way I wanted. I do admire Laura a lot also Cees and did not want to upset anyone. Sorry guys..!

We all know how much experience Laura has but I think that when Cees refers to "needs experience" he means riding a GP-Kur, with Alf, Andretti etc is to actually feel the tempo of the music and ride to it as accurately as possible. (Horse Hero says this comment was made before Cees's reply, but somehow got out of order!)

I don't agree! Top dressage riders got on top not because they were born in the saddle or riding from a very young age alone. Riders as Isabelle Werth, Anky van Grunsven sure did. Still, before reaching that very special top level a lot of experience was necessary. That's why Laura, at her age, with her skills and reaching already this level, is one of the most promising riders of this moment. She can reach higher levels than all her predecessors did before. But not without practising, practising and practising, building up the necessary experience. It's like a young talented concert pianist, one can play at the most incredible level, at a young age, but performing on a huge stage, before a huge and critical audience, every time with an unknown Orchestra behind you, and an unknown conductor next to you, is something different. To play and perform at ease on that required top-level under these circumstances, and keeping your skills in total control, holding up your personal charisma as the perdorming artist, this all needs only one thing: and that's called experience. Returning now to dressage, the freestyle to music particularly.

When Laura has to ride on a new music production, every movement of the choreography is translated in musical pulse, instrumentation, arrangement, rhythm pattern and tempo. Besides this, it's made to the measure for Alf and Laura, not only to the footfall, ground-movement, or natural pulse and rhythm of the horse, but in the highest degree of perfection in harmony for this combination. Boy, you need a awful lot of skills to perform on such a program. That gives a lot of stress and pressure and it's only experience that will help and in this case it is up to Laura, to perform at ease, keeping her personal charisma and ride Alf in a way that it looks so bloody simple and easy, but we all know it isn't.
