About this video
Susie Preest from Badminton Stables, with presenter Fiona Price. On one of the Beaufort Hunt’s last hunting days in the 2007/8 season, we watched Susie plaiting a horse, before being loaded onto the lorry. Susie, who’s worked at this yard for nearly 28 years, favours the needle and thread method because she says the plaits are more durable for a full day’s hunting. Nifty finger work, Susie!

Susie Preest's method for plaiting with needle and thread

  • Start with a neatly pulled mane so that the job is easier and the end result tidier.
  • Use a comb, knife (or scissors), needle, thread (same colour as the horse’s mane), damp sponge, hair clip and something to stand on.
  • Have a needle already threaded and knotted at the bottom and pin on your clothing.
