• Hold the headcollar or the horse’s muzzle and run the clippers against the grain of the hair, working your way around the horse’s nose, chin and mouth.
• Undo the back of the headcollar and run the clippers along the jaw line.
• When trimming the ears, Kitty holds the ear together and runs the clippers along the edge of the ear.
• She doesn’t like to clip inside the ear as the hair here offers protection from the rain. If horses get raindrops in their ears it often causes them to throw their heads around.
• If her horse was scared of clippers, Kitty would use a pair of scissors to trim the whiskers or the ears. But you don’t get such a neat finish and need to be very careful in case the horse flinches.
• You can also use a safety razor to trim the hair around the muzzle. This has a plastic protector on it so that you can’t get too close to the skin.
