About this video
Tail length is often the subject of heated debate! Brian Higham, at the Badminton Stables, demonstrates the appropriate length for hunting (as this is the emphasis at the Badminton yard). He also talks about protocol in other disciplines. The lovely dun mare (which belongs to Brian’s wife Sherry), stood like a soldier on this freezing cold day! Presented by Fiona Price.

Brian Higham's advice on trimming tails

  • Stand the horse square so that the tail hangs straight.
  • When tails are too long the hair snags on the horse’s chestnuts and gets ripped out which thins the tail at the bottom.
  • Tails that are too short will make the horse’s overall appearance seem unbalanced.
