About this video
These days, many competition horses and hunters tend to have pulled tails, rather than full tails which would require plaiting. Brian Higham at Badminton Stables, is probably one of the most knowledgeable horsemen in the country and he explains the origins of tail pulling - which were for practical rather than aesthetic reasons – and shows how it’s done. Presented by Fiona Price.

Brian Higham’s tips for pulling a tail

  • Don’t pull too much hair at once, try to keep on top of it every couple of weeks. This makes it easier for the horse as you don’t have to take too much each time.
  • Pull a tail after exercise when the horse is warm and the pores are open. The hair will come out easier.
  • Have a helper to hold the horse and if you are worried about getting kicked, put a bale or a stable door between you and the horse’s back legs.

rachyrooster 5 Jun 2008 This video is a perfect example of why this website is such a good idea! Diagrams, however good can never show you the motion, speed and technique of tail pulling. Also to be able to have someone show you how the tail looks and moves on the horse with reaction to the pulling. Excellent help, I’ll try not to scalp my poor horse’s tail next time I give it a go!
