Kitty Boggis's tips for cooling legs quickly

  • Fill ice cube bags with water and freeze them.
  • Store them in a cool box until you need them after your cross-country.
  • Cut a long length of tubigrip – enough to go twice along the horse’s cannon bone.

Warree 26 Aug 2010 This is a cheap practical method. Ideally the ice packs would have a more complete contact with the skin of the tendons, albeit protected by the tubigrip. So gel type ice packs may be more efficient. 10 to maybe 15 minutes of ice is probably better. You could repeat after about 2 hours. The reason is that amongst other things the ice causes blood vessel tension (vasoconstriction) which helps to move inflammatory fluid. After 10 minutes you get reflex vasodilation (floppy vessels). Hope this helps.

PiaffeDreams 1 Jan 2009 Great method! I'd love to try it as I've got some very expensive iceboots that never stay put. This looks like the super trick. The TubiGrip can be purchased online... anyone know what size this is she is using? Maybe the 3.5"?
