About this video

Here's action from Exmoor on day two of the Golden Horseshoe '09, with plenty of 'crew' activity caring for horses in the 50 and 100 mile rides, as well as getting their pulse rates down before the vettings. We learn how riders monitor their horses' heart rates and encourage them to drink regularly throughout the day. Jill Thomas, European Championships double gold medallist, tells us how the Golden Horseshoe differs from endurance race rides and introduces us to her latest protege Pompei. Fiona Price discovers that while endurance is a sport for all, true grit is required to make it to the top. Only for the hardy, no bling here!

brookhill 12 Jun 2009 I love the horse!
Fiona Price 11 Jun 2009 I appreciate the analogy which is a lovely one, but I can assure you Pompei looked like a pony to me after my own 17+ hand eventer! He is quite small when you are up close. My guess would be around 15 hands, maybe 15.1?
mariamarquise 11 Jun 2009 Lithe? - yes! Pony? - hardly! Akhal-Teke are about as far removed from ponies genetically as a horse can be. Think "Stubbs", "Byerly Turk"...
Fiona Price 11 Jun 2009 I didn't know of this breed before going to Exmoor so I assumed that most of the lithe looking pony types were Arabs. Apologies! You are right, he doesn't quite fit the Arab look, especially with his wall eye!
