Has anyone any experience to pass on about which vehicle to buy to pull a trailer. I have a Bateson double trailer and need to transport 2 x 16 hand large horses.

Every trailer has a MAM (maximum authorised mass) and every towing vehicle has a MTC (maximum towing capacity). These are the legal limits which you must not exceed, and it is always sensible to make sure that you are well under these limits as the vehicle will handle better.

The Bateson Deauville trailer has a MAM (maximum authorised mass) of 2300 Kg and weighs 860kg giving you at most 1440kg for your horses and anything else you put in it. Your horses should weigh about 650kg each, but if you load in a 5 gallon drum of water, a bale of hay and saddles that would add at least another 50Kg.

Your towing vehicle will need to have a MTC of at least the 2300kg. You can find out these by looking on the internet or, even easier by asking the trailer manufacturer. Don’t forget to allow for the weight you are carrying in the car as well (driver, passengers and all the bits and bobs you need to take with you)

There are several other things to consider in the towing vehicle - the towbar has to meet EC regulations for strength and height.

Don’t forget that, if you took your driving test after July 1996 you will have to take an additional driving test to tow a trailer.

Good luck in your search for a car – it is almost as bad as finding a horse!

Thanks for all the info. Do you have any specific recomendations?

I think that you are looking for a 4x4 - my knowledge of cars is very limited - as far as I am concerned, they have four wheels, go and stop and cost a lot to run about covers it.

I suggest that you go find some mechanically minded person (usually a man) and ask them!!

You cant beat a land rover, built like tractors and go forever! I have a Defender 110 - long wheel based one and it tows the larger Equitrek Showtreka and 2 17hh plus horses with all our equipment for a 2 days competition with no problem at all.
