Does any one know why we plait for hunting? But we don’t plait for cubbing? I can see that doing dressage and showing plaiting looks very smart and helps show off the horse in the best possible way, but why bother for hunting? Surely apart from anything it would be great to have a whole lot of mane to told onto when jumping? In general, why do people make their horses so smart to go galloping through a muddy field and the effect to be ruined in about 5 seconds flat!?

Because turnout at the meet is mostly about a bit of posing! And it's respectful to the hunt staff and the hosts of the meet for you and your horse to be smartly turned out. I think plaits look great and are the perfect finishing touch. Cubbing is a more relaxed affair in general so that's why plaits aren't necessary. A mane might help for hanging on but you could always use a neck strap instead if you are worried? A neatly pulled mane (which you should have even if you don't plait) won't give you much to hang onto anyway!!

We plait for hunting to show respect to the person who is hosting the meet and to the hunt. the host will often supply large quantities of booze and food for all who attend at considerable expense, and can also have spent a long time moving any stock in surrounding fields etc, to ensure that you, the field have an enjoyable day. The hunt has no right to cross any landowners fields unless it is by the landowners consent and the least we can do to thank them is to show that we have gone to a certain amount of effort as well.

Ditto the other answers. It is etiquette and tradition.

Its all about showing respect to the landowners, master and his team. You can always undo a couple of plaits once the meet is over and the hunt moves off no one would feel that was disrespectful.
