I am currently loaning a 21yo hanovarian(sp)x thoroughbred and in the last few days just behind where his saddle would go hes got a tense muscle on his left hand side, it doesnt seem to bad and the owner of the yard has had a look at it. Hes not been ridden due to it and so far all im doing with him is stretches, hes had a back massage and a hot water bottle put on it, ive been lunging him but only walking with him to see if it stretches it a bit which seems to of helped but was wondering if anyone knows anything else i could do with him to help loosen it off?

thank you

Once you get this sorted, whether by massage or physio, i would recommend that you are use a big sheepskin numnah, of course make sure the saddle fits well.
With horses in training, I always lead the horse in its cooling off period for the last five minutes, this allows the saddle itself to act as a massage on the target area.

Hi butterflygirlx

I think the first thing to do is to get your horse’s back checked by a qualified physio. A tense muscle may be an injury in itself or may be caused by an injury or problem elsewhere, so rally needs to be checked. A good physio will probably want a referral from your vet before they look at your horse’s back, but in any case it may well be worth contacting your vet anyway as they will probably recommend a good physio for you.

You also need to find out why and how your horse has developed a problem. Has he had a fall or stumble or been particularly stupid out in the field? Make sure that the saddle fits well (and, if you are intending to use a back pad, that it fits with the back pad).

I hope that the problem gets sorted quickly so that you can get vback riding quickly
