I was just wondering what sort of fitness regime people follow with their horses. I’ve got an event horse working at a very low level so I school him about 2 times a week and canter him about once, the rest of the time I just hack, unless I have a lesson/event or training session.
However I need to work on my dressage more, how many times can I school him in a week without him getting bored or unnecessarily straining his legs?

Why don't you vary some of your other sessions? For example, do a hack and finish on 10 mins schooling, or during the hack, if you can find a field, do a bit then. You can also work in outline on the road while you are hacking and, if a quiet lane, do some leg yield, halting etc. On your flat sessions, include the odd jump to improve your engagement and raised trot poles. Personally, and I am only an amateur event rider myself, I think it's about variety and not drilling your horse or yourself to the point of boredom or injury. Make it fun and mix it up!
