I have recently bought a 6yr old ex race horse, he has been re-schooled on the flat and is progressing very well with a sensible temperament, and eagerness to learn.... However i have just started to try to introduce him to trotting poles, which he is absolutely terrified of! He has had no bad experiences in the past that i am aware of, and it is only early days. I've a lot of time and patience to introduce him slowly, but just wondered if anybody has any ideas to help.

Perhaps just have poles scattered around the school and lead him round them not even over them in the first instance and only get as close as he is comfortable without spooking. Then let him stand quietly looking at the nearerst pole, until he is really relaxed. Next time perhaps the same - you might find he will let you get closer but don't risk him spooking. I think that hye will gradually let you take him up to them and over them, in hand. Repeat under saddle. Be patient! If this is really difficult, start with just one pole and lead him past, back and fore, only at the space from the pole he is comfortable with and progress from there. Or turn him out in the school with the poles, if it is safe, and let him get familiar himself. Boot him up well and stay close to keep an eye on him.

I agree with Emsy99. Also, if he's out in the field maybe put some poles out there? Perhaps the best thing you could do, if possible is get another horse who's good with poles to give him a lead. :)
