Ermm, I think you can but I don't think you can really rely on it much.

Your first ask should be of your parents ..... it helps if they are rich! Realistically you need to learn as much as you can, possibly get a job in a top yard with training, expect to be worked hard, but you will also have to stand out from the crowd, and become an exceptional rider, you need to be riding four or five horses per day, learn lunging and all the other training requirements, but in return for this training your employer will need to get value from you, so you must be responsible, hard working, reliable and cheerful. register on one or two staff employment sites and see what is required.

You can make a living from eventing, if you are good enough. However, even the top riders have fall back options as eventing, like most sports is not a job for life but something you will have to be prepared to retire from at short notice. Injuries do happen after all so it is best to develop a reputation in other horse-related zones whilst pushing towards the top.

As you probably know, this 'other thing' could be very diverse; but I think I would suggest considering training and getting qualifications maybe as a trainer, instructor, farrier, dentist, vet etc. etc. Something which you could probably still be doing when you are 70! Maybe an equine science degree? You then have a fall-back option if you aren't quite good enough... or alternatively easy advertising when you are looking for a good enough horse. You can then choose whether to event for fun/use as business advertising or event seriously and use the 'day job' as advertising/pay the rent. Hope this helps!
