I was amazed to hear that BE is thinking of adding a 5* competition. While this sounds grand, it means that 4* will be 5*. However, this creates room for a 1* at the lower, Pre-Novice level. What on earth for?! Surely by adding a lower star level (like having Intro classes and allowing ever younger riders to compete), this devalues eventing as an affiliated discipline? Why overlap with Riding Club and Pony Club which have much to offer at the unaffiliated level? It smacks of any old excuse to bring in money from grass roots. BE would be better to get some serious business people into the organisation and create a more effective strategy to raise sponsorship and other forms of commercial funding.

I totally agree. What is the point of making a level below the current 1*? That is what PN and N one day events and unafilliated three days are for. It's just a money making exercise. The pre-novice three days at Chepstow have been massively under-subscribed so why bother creating more events like this. And whether the new 1* is a CIC or CCI it won't be a true international because no-one would travel from abroad to compete at such a low level. So why would you pay more to enter a new CIC* than a regular one day? At that level it seems pointless! Why change a system that works?

Where does the sponsor money go at the moment?
I cannot believe the events where there are over 200 entries cannot organise better prizes. Coming first in a novice recently won me bag of carrots and a vase. I spent over £300 going and entering the competition. How does the BSJA do better prizes?

It must cost a lot to get insurance cover for Evening though…

I remember as a young photographer going to the Auckland 3DE when they had a training class (equal to novice) it was held amongst and along with the higher levels, bit I have so many pic of people falling off and overall bad riding (due to a lack of experience and pressure) while it was good for the likes of Mark Todd to get some experience into his young horses for the avarage person the pressure was too great. Now they have cut these classes out alltogether and the crowd numbers have increased as people pay to go and watch top level riders in action not pony clubbers come wannabe Olympians... while we all have dreams and goals there are ways and means of achieving them! It is a better event now. Sure its hard because as far as I know Punuhi (err can't spell the Maori names!) is the biggest international 3DE held in NZ (someone put me right if I'm wrong because I have been resident in Melbourne for 6 years and am now out of touch) but that's been my previous experience of including lower levels of eventing with the internationals!
