I would go show-jumping more often but I can't afford to waste that amount of time! Every time I go it's a day out just to do one class or two if I am lucky because there always seem to be classes around 100 (at the 1.05 and 1.10 level) but no way of knowing this until you arrive. So you can't turn up late just in case classes are smaller, and if you arrive on time you could be waiting 3 hours to jump one round and wait all over again if you are mad enough to do two classes. This is utterly ridiculous!

I agree.. to the point where you almost hope you won't be in with a chance of winning because you know you'll have to stay right to the end. Surely someone can devise a system of dividing a showjumping competition into sections so that there isn't as much hanging around. Maybe 2 or 3 separate sections in a day - early, middle and late classes that you have to pre-book for and pay double entry fees if you arrive outside your correct section. The delay isn't so bad with combined training because at least you have something else happening in between your showjumping times. It's particularly challenging when you have to stay close to keep your turn but horses are shuffling and banging into one another. Could be some nasty scenes. Any ideas anyone or don't others mind the waiting about?

I've just thought of a way to break the boredom... I'm sure there are riders out there who'd like a competition buddy. It's much more fun competing when you have a pal along to share your 'wow' moment or commiserate when you've put on a totally rubbish performance. For safety reasons too it's always better not to go it alone to competitions. Maybe a bit like car-sharing but without the commuting. Not thinking romance but just a like-minded pal.... I'll start the ball rolling... I'd like to do more showjumping but none of my mates are interested. I'd be wanting to compete in West Oxfordshire/Gloucestershire area...... anyone going it alone but keen not to? I'm in my twenties and normally do the Open classes.

You could join your local riding club? They have loads of team competitions so you are there with others and also have an interest in how everyone gets on. It's good fun and the standard is often quite high.

Sorry, I am a bit late, just a few months though, to add a comment, but if you think its bad for the jockey spare a thought for the driver/ groom / manager, as my jockey is a little young for driving she had a simple solution to the waiting around problem, easy for an eleven year old daughter to come up with this answer, take more ponies. But I understand the frustration waiting around is hard enough as an adult, but with a small (I want to get on with it and win child) its a lot harder.
