When jumping I sometimes lose my balance, causing my heels to come up and lower leg to swing back, How can I learn to stop this? Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

It's possibly because your body is infront of the horse as you take off. Balance partly comes from the leg position but more importantly, a secure leg position comes from your torso, afterall, your legs are attached to it! I usually think of sitting softly into my horse on the last few strides so I spread my bottom over the largest surface area possible and the words 'tits out' are usually etched in my mind as it graphically makes the point! That way my centre of gravity is in the middle of the horse and my shoulders are not infront of the movement on takeoff. So my leg is in the right place without thinking about it. My advice would be to play around with your body awareness and what makes a difference for your horse as all horses are riders are different. An instructor can observe so much but you have to feel you way to a safe position.
