I love the rider fitness videos in the gym, but would love it if he could suggest a whole workout for riders (especially the core strength) with how many repetitions etc as I am not sure how much to do!?

Firstly, apologies for the delay! I hope I've managed to work the technology ok, which sounds a daft statement from a Sports Scientist!

To get true core strength, we first need to insure good pelvic function. When riding hips and the ability to control the pelvis get very tight and the movement becomes blocked. Try placing your hands on your hips, and tilting your pelvis forward and backward, as if they were the top of a bucket of water and you were tipping water out of the front and back. Try to do this without your abs or glutes working.

When you have this, the place to start core strength is the balance hold position. Sitting, arms across chest lean back and lift your feet off the floor. Hold this for as long as possible. If you feel this in your back, we haven't got the pelvic stability right, but if you feel it in your abs then we've got it right. Try to hold for 45 seconds and repeat up to 5 times!

With the ball work, try to do this as much as possible, even in front of the TV! Left for a while, your stability and reactions will dull, so keep it up. Out in Hong Kong I got William FP to work on the ball before going cross country, and look at how that went!

I'll speak to Fiona about doing some regular exercises on the site to follow and it would be great to perhaps run a day clinic somewhere? Hope this helps and let me know if you have any further questions. Jon

Thanks for that, I now have plenty to work on, especially as my horse is off games at the moment, so I must work on my own fitness even more!
