About this video

Four star event rider Louise Skelton gives three year old baby Sam, his third jumping lesson. Given his huge size Sam is remarkably together and helpful, which is just as well as Louise is so tiny! Starting with trotting poles, Louise moves on to a crosspole. Sam obliges but doesn't make much effort. Only when faced with a small upright does he break out of a trot to jump! Encouraged by this, Louise introduces him to his first double, where where he shows some talent for a future in eventing! Louise explains the importance of a progressive approach to allow time to absorb the learning and says keep sessions short as youngsters tire easily.

Louise Skelton 14 Dec 2009 I only use the roller ball spurs as they are not too sharp. I would rather Sam did not get lazy to my leg, so I think with the spurs this will help. I only use them on him for schooling and jumping, not for hacking out. Hopefully he will eventually learn to be well in front of the leg and then I won't need them!
EllenL62 13 Dec 2009 Brilliant video, I am an early horse hero watcher but have only subscribed yesterday and have been putting it off but having done it yesterday I must say I had forgotten how much I enjoy watching the videos! So thank you Fiona! I just have one question for Louise which is why are you wearing spurs? I am a 17 year old aspiring dressage rider (who is again rather short!) and whilst schooling a 4yr old last year was told to put very small spurs on for the first couple of sessions teaching lateral movements but was warned against wearing them with youngsters so would be interested to know your view on this?
Louise Skelton 25 Nov 2009 Sam was broken in in August this year. Since this video his jumping has really improved. He got a rosette at his first small combined training competition.
Diana 16 Nov 2009 When I read that Sam is only 3 I thought it was young to jump him, then I saw the excellent way Louise rides him and realised that it is literally just baby steps. I am sure he will have a long, happy career ahead of him because of the sympathetic approach Louise takes with him.
Fiona Price 13 Nov 2009 We have just filmed another young horse session with Shane Breen who rode a lovely young event horse cross country for us. Coming soon!
