About this video

Tricks trainer and performer Rosie Howard from Jive Pony teaches Aristo, a young unbroken stallion a few tricks. Aristo quickly learns to kiss, cross his legs and shake his head, on demand. Rosie says it's about using your imagination and that of your horse, creating a strong association between a cue and an action, then repetition, consistency, patience and reward! According to Rosie, "tricks are a great way to enjoy your horse and enhance your relationship with him; they are also a clever way to get focused quickly when you need to at a show!" Rosie demonstrates the fully trained tricks on her obliging youngster Caspar!

Rosie 5 Feb 2010 Hello everyone, thankyou for all the positive comments! Trick training is a lot of fun and I hope you've got a basic idea how to get started on some tricks from the video. Those of you asking about 'parking' your horse, you just have to use the same principles and build up gradually, it just takes time! As for catching, that's a bit more difficult... Merlin, you're right about the grey highland, he's the original Jive Pony and is called Ronan, he belongs to Rebecca and does all the dancing and vaulting in our shows too. If you want to find out more about him just look at our website. If you've got any more questions just ask - I'll do my best to answer!
knabstupper 4 Feb 2010 This looks alot like clicker training with "good boy" instead of "click" and without the bridge conditioning.
rush60 4 Feb 2010 Looks like fun. I do a class called showmanship with my horse and parts of it like intricate backing standing in position and pivoting on the haunches and moving in sync with me on a loose lead are quite trick like. I would like more on this topic How do you get them "catching"?
Merlin1997 4 Feb 2010 Thanks, thats good to know, im looking forward to it. I'm sure I have seen magazine features with her and a grey highland(?). Amazing, Merlin would be perfect for that and he has a good wide back for vaulting though I think I will give it a miss!
Fiona Price 3 Feb 2010 Regards more filming, I will be making a video diary at one of Rosie's forthcoming shows, possibly Caspar's first public appearance. As well as tricks, Rosie does vaulting (at liberty, ie. not a lunge line in sight) and I am really interested to see this!
