About this video
Laura Bechtolsheimer continues the training with her 6 year old Dan, who is working towards Prix St Georges next season. Focusing on lateral work, Laura demonstrates the sequence of exercises she uses leading up to Half Pass. Dan is a darling but Laura, who is still only 23 (though she has already been to an Olympics), shows astonishing insight and empathy. She also has the gift of clarity! This is a gem of a video!

Laura Bechtolsheimer 30 Aug 2010 Hi Maria, sounds like you are doing a great job and you are right, on a straight line its pretty much the same thing, one bending the horse around your left leg abd the other around the right leg. Glad you liked the clip...!
mariamarquise 25 Aug 2010 I come back to this video time and time again, it's so fantastic. This time I have a question: my horse has a back deformity which means his ability for dressage is extremely limited, plus he has remembered that he was in pain when ridden by a professional, before we knew about his compromised spine, so he will not work in the school under saddle anymore. He works beautifully on the lunge, we use Kavalkade rein which we learned about from HorseHero but the lateral work we can only do when riding outside, mostly on tarmac. We have perfected (well, to our standard!) shoulder-in and travers on the road but I am struggling to conceptualise renvers when I am not in a manege. If I am to ride a renvers on the road, so we are on a straight, is there really a difference between travers and renvers? In travers, his front is along the hedge and his quarters are sticking out into the middle of the road. In renvers, his quarters will be along the hedge and the front will be towards the middle of the road with the head looking in the direction of the movement, so basically straight up the road, is that right? Maria
