Retraining ex-racehorses with Lisa Venables: Part 3

About this video

Retraining the mount-up is an essential part of retraining an ex-racehorse. Lisa Venables explains the system horses in racing are used to and suggests the same method is used initially. She then demonstrates the steps to mounting conventionally. Goldie, who has only recently come out of racing has never seen a mounting block and is not used to a rider being above her eye-line, or feeling the full weight of the rider in one stirrup. Lisa's approach involves athleticism from the rider and good handler on the ground! She says, "it's like starting a youngster, you need to look out for the subtle signs all the time". (Part 3 of 3)

PooBear 19 Sep 2011 Brilliant videos! Very interesting and helpful....wish I had seen them years ago before I had my ex-racers. All makes perfect sense and is a must for anyone taking on an ex-race horse. I have known of so many fall into ignorant and inexperienced hands. Thank you
JaniceH 22 Aug 2011 Hi Lisa, thanks for the coaching phone call and the good ideas to work on the canter. We started with the lunging exercises this weekend so will keep you updated how we progress!
Lisa Venables 5 Aug 2011 Hi Emma, Well done, it sounds like you're on the right track and it's great to hear that you still have the odd trip to the gallops. I always found it fantastic for the horses both physically and mentally to hack up the gallops occasionally. It sounds like you know what you're doing but for anyone else reading this please be aware that it's important to know what you are doing. You need to work within your horses current fitness range - if you go too fast you could incur injury. We always started with a hack canter or steady which (while hard to describe) is a slow, settled gallop - so ensure you can steady the pace and relax your horse before attempting. I covered a little of this in video one, but happy to give more advice if useful to anyone.
emmabetts 4 Aug 2011 I have really enjoyed these videos. I am lucky enough to have been given a big mare straight out of racing. Two years on we are doing well and just starting to get out an about doing dressage and jumping - and the odd trip to the gallops which she loves. There are so many tips that would have been invaluable to me. I hope there will be some more! Thanks.
Laura T 3 Aug 2011 Hi Lisa, interesting comments about canter. Me and my ex-racer have great problems striking off on the correct lead on the right rein. He is fine going left. I hope we are going to see more videos from you.
