About this video
Carl Cuypers, Belgian Grand Prix dressage rider and 'stable jockey' to Laura Bechtolsheimer, clarifies the elusive subject of spurs! He takes us through the range of options and explains what to use at different stages in your horse's development. He also tells us when not to wear them! Carl demonstrates how to fit spurs to your boot and he models the correct way of using them on Douglas Dorsey, the horse that put Laura Bechtolsheimer on the map by winning the National Championships!

RebeccaAnne 26 Feb 2009 This is why I love Horse Hero so much. Everyone assumes that you know how to use spurs and what type to choose. I didn't, I do now! Thank you Horse Hero and Carl.
Fiona Price 21 Feb 2009 Diana, it's unlikely we can film with Douglas as he is now retired!
Diana 21 Feb 2009 I like this video. It reiterates how to do things properly. It is great to see Douglas Dorsey again! Please can you film more of him!
Sarah Houstoun 21 Feb 2009 For safety sake the buckle of the spur should be close to the outer shaft of the spur so that it is not able to connect with the stirrup. For comfort sake moving the buckle off centre will be more comfortable for the rider; I have found that if the buckle is where you describe it causes a hardness at the point of flexion of the joint (though this depends on how tight the strap is), if it is to the side it does not affect the ability for the rider to keep their heels down.
