  • An amazing life, but the rescue work is where my heart truly lies!

Captain, one of the Kilkenny horses rescued by the IHWTAs I was mucking out this morning I was in a reflective mood, as I have been for the past week or so. I have such a full and varied life and this past month sums it up. In December alone I have saved a dog's life in court, been to a memorial service, celebrated some wonderful moments with my beloved family and with my friends, laughed, cried, worked with some difficult dogs, helped horses in distress, written, blogged, attended some wonderful events with my family with our celebrity hats on, enjoyed the company of our own animals, reconnected with old friends and made new ones too. I have been interviewed on the radio and for a magazine about my new book, co-authored with my good friend Marie Miller, and had meetings to discuss future television projects.

This is my life and I wouldn’t have it any other way, but if I had to choose one part of my work only, without doubt, it would be the rescue side. Standing in the icy yard at the IHWT last week, drinking a cup of hot coffee whilst listening to Fairytale of New York playing on the radio, I turned to watch the bay show jumping mare looking over her door with a look of total joy in her eyes and I knew without a shadow of a doubt, that this aspect of my job is where my heart truly lies. So may 2010 bring you all that you hope for and I wish you, and your animals, well.

Dear Bumble - thank you for your lovely comments. The picture above is of a little colt that fell in the lorry and was in terrible condition. He went into shock but the care of the IHWT staff ensured that he survived and he is now with his new owner who is in the picture with him. I feel truly blessed to know the team at the IHWT and all those who work tirelessly every day of the year to provide safety and security for animals in distress. I am also so, so lucky to have an amazing family and to have had the opportunity to learn what I have which has enabled me to help so many animals over the years. I hope you too have a wonderful 2010 and thank you again for taking the time to post your lovely feedback. Best wishes Sarah

Dear Sarah, I had tears in my eyes reading your last blog but thankfully there are people like you out there who do not give up or turn away when presented with a "lost cause". And what would all those lovely animals, be it dogs or horses, cats or donkeys, do without people like you? If they could talk they would tell you how much they appreciate your work but then sometimes, as you have said, the look in their eyes when you help them tells the whole story. Anyway, from all the animals out there and all the people who chrish and enjoy their pets and horses: hope you`ll have a wonderful 2010, all the best and thanks for your great work!!
